Miniature wargaming at its best…

I thought I would write an article about miniature games in particular Warmahordes, or Warmachine and Hordes.  These would have to be my current favorite game with minis, since I have only played one game of X-Wing.  I play both Warmachine and Hordes.  My favorite Warmachine factions are Cygnar and Retribution.  Cygnar is all about High Tech and Lightning -based Weapons.  Retribution are angry elves!  They are highly specialized and focus on killing other warcasters.  My Faction in Hordes is The Circle of Orboros – basically eco-terrorist druids that focus on trickery.  I love the mechanics used in both games, and they are both compatible with one another.  They accurately represent what the minis are trying to do in combat, and it is a very elegant system.  I would like to get into it more in depth, but maybe in my next post.  Here are some pics below:-

Dust Warfare

I bought the Dust Tactics starter box, but i was also interested in playing the game on a bigger scale than Dust Tactics (which is like a board game with minis).  So I bought the Dust Warfare rulebook.  It uses the same minis as as Tactics, but has a modified ruleset, taking into account the larger battlefield, bigger armies, etc.  I’m looking forward to playing it with my friend soon.

More new games!

I just bought two ships for Star Trek Attack Wing, The U.S.S. Defiant and The I.K.S. Kronos One.  I also managed to get Shadows Over Camelot the board game.  Unfortunately I don’t have a photo because I got the shop to to post it to my address in Brisbane.  Picture below:- Image

AT-43

The last time I was in Melbourne I visited a gaming store and saw some people playing a tabletop miniature war game called AT-43.  I had heard of it already, but hadn’t seen it played in Brisbane and I only found the starter box being sold in Brisbane.  The game looked really good, and based on everything I had read about it, I decided to try it for myself.  I bought the starter set and a lot of other miniatures, and once I had a look at the rules I was really impressed with the combat resolution.  It was really intuitive.  I eventually met someone in a games club who played it, and we played some games.  Unfortunately the company that made it closed down, so I can only get it from eBay.  I will try and put some pictures of it on the blog as long as that’s not illegal.  An interesting side note – Dust Tactics, which I was brought out by FFG and now distributed by Battlefront games, is similar in style to AT-43, and the minis and walkers look very similar.  That’s another game I’m keen to play after buying the starter box.  Maybe I could try playing AT-43 with Dust Tactics minis !

D&D Adventure System Games

I own Castle Ravenloft which is technically a board game with miniatures, except that you use dungeon tile pieces instead of a traditional board, and as the players explore the dungeon they play a new tile, slowly revealing the dungeon and fighting an monsters they encounter.   I have never played hero quest, but I own the most recent version of space hulk, and I assume they share a similar tile placement mechanic.  Ravenloft can be quite challenging, especially when the players spawn multiple monsters of the same type and the heroes are spread out away from each other.  I’m hoping to buy the second and third games in the series – The Wrath of Ashardalon and The Legend of Drizzt, respectively.  The cool thing about the system is the ability to mix components of the games togetherit adding a lot of replayability.

First game of X-Wing

A few weeks back my friends that I regularly play board games with, had another session and we decided to play X-Wing and Castle Ravenloft. We played X-Wing first and it was really awesome! It was 2 on 2 – me with the Millennium Falcon and my friend with Luke Skywalker’s x-wing, against my two other friends with Slave-1 and two tie-fighters, Night Beast and Mauler Mithel. It was really close, but then rebels won after Skywalker was killed but the falcon just managed to save the day. It was awesome fun, but next time I would like to try playing with just fighters instead of the larger ships, though.

Rebels 1- Scum 0

Last week, i got my butt handed to me when i played some sessions of Star Wars LCG.  i played a pure scum and villainy (bounty hunters) deck, and my friend played his Pure Rebel Hoth Speeder deck that he was testing to see if it was a viable build to take to a tourney.  He totally crushed me – my deck wasn’t the greatest, and i didn’t realise how resource heavy scum decks can be, but his deck construction was top-notch.  Every objective set he had, synergised   perfectly with each other,  and he played very well, so i think he will go well at the tourney.  its back to the drawing board for me – i’m doing a lot of deck building experimentation on cardgamedb now.
